A Covenant with My Eyes

Read Job 31 – 33

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid? Job 31:1 KJV

Normally a covenant is an agreement or promise between two or more individuals. In this case Job is saying he made a promise to his eyes that he would not look upon a woman with lust or immoral desire for her. Such agreements are much needed today as well. Our times can be very distracting for the eyes. Advertising of all kinds, clothing styles, films, etc., all are intended to catch the attention of a person’s eye. As Eve discovered, what enters the eye also stirs the heart, and causes a response. James says before sin occurs we are first enticed (James 1:14-15). Enticement usually begins with the eyes. Job made a promise to his eyes so he could protect his heart from sin and maintain a right relation with the Lord. Can such a strategy really work? Sure it can! Bring your promise before God, ask Him for the needed strength to keep it, and then keep the promise to yourself.

Lord, such covenants are much needed among people today. I need it with my own eyes. Help me keep the promise I have made to my own eyes that I might serve You with a pure heart.
