A Famine of Hearing God’s Word

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. Amos 8:11 KJV

Throughout their years of rebellion God sent prophets to Israel challenging them to hear His Word, repent of their ways, and turn to Him once again. Rather than hearing the prophets, they ignored them and often tried to shut them up. As with Joel, sometimes a famine was sent to get their attention. With Amos, God warned of an entirely different kind of famine, instead of a famine of water or food it would be one of hearing the Word of God. God was not going to remove His Word, prophets would still be sent, but due to their refusal to hear God’s Word, they would no longer be able to hear it. There is an important principle here: our response to the Word of God will affect our ability to hear it.

Lord, today Your Word is so readily available that none can claim they don’t have access to it. Even so, very few seem to hear it. I wonder if we are in danger of the same fate Israel was in the days of Amos, unable to hear it due to our neglect of it. Lord, keep my ears tuned to Your Word, and help me always respond to it as I should.
