A Grasshopper Complex

Read Numbers 13 – 15

And we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.  Numbers 13:33 KJV

This was the testimony of the spies that were sent by Moses to investigate the land of promise. The men of the land were of great stature, and, with the exceptions of Caleb and Joshua, the spies were frightened at the sight of them. Because they failed to understand God and His promises were greater, the spies were only able to see their own smallness. They focused on what they could not do, rather than on what God could do and in fact had promised to do. Too often, we to our circumstances the same as they did. We make ourselves smaller than God has made us, we focus on our inabilities rather than His promises, and as a result others see us as we see ourselves. Since we are small in our own eyes we are also small in their eyes. It is always better to look through the strength and promises of God. His strength makes us stronger, and His promises give us confidence.

Lord, too often I feel more like the spies who failed than I do Caleb and Joshua. I dwell on my shortcomings rather than your promises. I do not want to suffer the consequences of not taking you at your Word. Help me look beyond my inabilities to your ability.

A question to ponder: What challenge am I presently facing that is bigger than I am but not bigger than God?
