A Noble Handling of Scripture

By April 16, 2013No Comments

These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. Acts 17:11 KJV

After leaving Thessalonica, Paul and Silas next went to Berea. As was their custom they first went to the synagogue to preach Christ. The members of this synagogue are characterized as being high-minded because of the way they received and used the Word of God. First, they received it with eagerness. In Thessalonica Paul and Silas experienced opposition, but in Berea the people were happy to hear the Scriptures taught. Our attitude makes a big difference when hearing Scripture. If we are open to what we hear, then the teaching will have greater effectiveness. Second, having received the Word they then searched the Scriptures on their own to make sure what they were taught was true.

Lord, I want to be noble in my own use of Your Word. Help me have the right attitude toward it every time I read or hear it. I want my heart and mind to be fertile ground for Your Word. Also protect me from a mere emotional or mental response to Your Word. Cause me to search it out so I know what it teaches and can respond appropriately
