A Proof-Text for the Son

Read Psalm 110—112.

“The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool” (Psalm 110:1, KJV).

Psalm 110 is a messianic psalm, meaning it speaks prophetically about Christ. Because it is often quoted in the New Testament, it is considered significant (Matthew 22:44; Acts 2:34; Hebrews 1:13). It explains the Messiah’s threefold office as prophet, priest, and king. Jesus Himself quoted verse 1 while debating with the Pharisees in Matthew 22:41–46. Recognizing it as a psalm of David and as Scripture, He asked the Pharisees if the Messiah was David’s son, why David called Him Lord. They were puzzled and could not give Him an answer. Looking back, we now know the answer. Although the Messiah is in the line of David, He also precedes David. The psalm recognizes a conversation between God the Father and God the Son, referring to the exaltation of the Son. Jesus used it to claim deity. He was indicating His true humanity, but at the same time His deity as well.

Lord, I am encouraged reading this psalm and understanding how You used it to speak of Yourself. It affirms Your deity, Your role as Messiah, and Your exaltation. This adds to the foundation of my faith, making it a solid place to stand.

A question to ponder through the day: Today the Son sits at the right hand of the Father. He is high and lifted up. Can I say He is the sovereign Lord in every aspect of my life?
