A Time for Rejoicing

Read Numbers 29 – 30

And on the fifteenth day of the seventh month ye shall have a holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days. Numbers 29:12 KJV

Chapters 28-29 describe the daily, weekly, monthly, and annual sacrifices required of the people of Israel under the Mosaic Law. Every day, week, month, and year the people were reminded of their sinfulness and what it cost. By any standard the cost was high. Chapter 29 especially looks at the seventh month which contained the Day of Atonement, the Passover sacrifice for sin, and the Feast of Tabernacles, a week-long time of humble rejoicing for their deliverance. It is significant that this time of rejoicing followed the Day of Atonement, for without the sacrifice for sin there would be no cause for rejoicing. It is interesting each day of the festival also had sacrifices, indicating the people were never able to fully escape their sinfulness. With Jesus as our Passover sacrifice, believers today have cause for rejoicing (1 Corinthians 5:7-8), for our deliverance from sin is complete.

Lord, how grateful I am to live under your sacrifice rather than the constant sacrifices of the old system which were only a shadow of things to come. Since I enjoy this privilege help me live in its freedom rejoicing in you.
