A Time to Fight

Read Exodus 17 – 19

Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. Exodus 17:8-9 KJV

The people of Amalek were the enemies of God’s people. They attacked in Rephidim because Israel was physically and spiritually vulnerable. We too have an enemy, Satan, and can expect him to always attack when it is to his advantage and not ours. It will always be when we are already vulnerable. Although we do not choose when and where, we can choose whether or not to fight. Moses chose to fight against the enemy of God’s people; we must as well. I like the picture of Moses standing on the hill with the rod of God in his hand. That rod had been with Moses since his days as a shepherd. It was used as an instrument of God to display His power. As Moses lifted the rod, he laid hold of God’s power and Israel prevailed in battle. The rod was not the cause of victory; God alone was. Later, in verse 15, Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner.

Lord, I know Satan usually attacks when I am least prepared for him, but I am grateful on such occasions not to have to face him alone. You are the source of my strength, the banner that encourages me, enabling me to prevail, even when I am least able to do so.
