Adam and Sin

Read Romans 5 – 6

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for all have sinned. Romans 5:12 KJV

Verse 12 introduces Adam by mentioning the entrance of sin into the world, referencing Genesis 2-3. There are those who question the historicity of these chapters and Adam. While my son was in school he had a teacher say the events of these chapters never happened, and there never was an Adam and Eve. I have always considered such comments foolish. At some point there had to be an Adam and Eve for the rest of us to be here, even genetic scientists believe that. But for Christians, there should never be a question. Either the Bible speaks truthfully, or it does not. Whenever the Bible speaks of Adam it does so as a historical person. Even this passage presents a contrast between Adam and Christ; if one is not real then neither is the other. So, when we look at Genesis 2-3 we look at history, the entrance of sin into the world, and why it still affects us today.

Lord, it seems people are always looking for an opportunity to deny the truthfulness of your Word and the universal problem of sin. I am grateful for the consistency of your Word which affirms its accuracy and enables us to deal honestly with sin.

A question to ponder: If neither Adam, nor the entrance of sin in Genesis 2-3, were historical, then is there any need for the Savior, Jesus Christ?
