Calling on the Lord

By January 2, 2014No Comments

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. Genesis 4:26 KJV

After the death of Abel, perhaps 200 years passed when men apparently did not call upon the Lord (5:3-4). But with the descendents of Seth, people again became characterized by prayer. To call upon the Lord’s name indicates humility. Seth named his first-born Enos, which means frailty. Seth could see the pride of Cain’s descendents did not benefit mankind and turned to the Lord instead. It also indicates dependence. Cain and his descendents boasted in what they could accomplish. Seth recognized his shortcomings and looked to God. To call upon the Lord also indicates worship. To worship is simply to acknowledge God’s worth. Cain went out from the presence of the Lord because he refused to acknowledge God’s place. Seth called on God’s name believing He alone is worthy. When you and I call on the Lord it indicates humility, dependence, and worship.

Lord, it seems amazing that early in the development of mankind men could have gone so long without calling upon You. Forgive me for the times I have not humbled myself before You, depended on You, and worshiped You as I should. Help me be known as one who calls on the name of the Lord.
