Consider Our Ways

By October 17, 2013No Comments

Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat, but ye have not enough; ye drink, but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways. Haggai 1:5-7 KJV

The prophet Haggai ministered to people who returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian Captivity. When they first returned they had a mind to rebuild the Temple but were soon distracted by their own interests. They re-laid the foundation of the Temple but did not proceed any further. Their attention turned to what they wanted: nicer homes, better clothes, and a bigger paycheck. Because of misplaced priorities they experienced four consequences: their harvest was smaller, their food and drink left them unsatisfied, their clothing did not meet their need, and their money seemed to go faster than they could earn it. Sounds familiar doesn’t it. So the prophet had a simple message: Consider your ways.

Lord, even today, with all that we have, we never seem satisfied. We have nice homes, nice clothes, great food, and big wages, but it never seems like enough. Help us also consider our ways, test our priorities, and make sure they line up with what You want rather than what we want.
