Consideration for Aging Ministers

Read Numbers 8:21-26

And from the age of fifty years they shall cease waiting upon the service thereof, and shall serve no more. Numbers 8:25 KJV

I have notice a good pastor rarely stops after an eight hour day or a forty hour week, instead they work well beyond that. I have also noticed their duties do not change from the time they enter the ministry till the time they depart from it. Perhaps this is why good ministers of God seem to wear out physically and mentally earlier than people of other professions. The Law made allowances for the changing abilities of its ministers, the Levites. The ministry of the Levites was both physical and spiritual because they cared to all the needs of the Tabernacle; they torn it down, transported it, set it up, etc. But at age fifty the physical activity ceased; they would still perform spiritual duties, but the young ministers would care for the more physical tasks. This wisdom did not originate with Moses but God, and perhaps we would be wise to follow its principle in ministry today.

Lord, I want to be used by you in ministry as long as possible. Help me exercise wisdom in the tasks I choose that I might best serve you according to my age and abilities.
