Faith Not Works

For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. Romans 4:3 KJV

What must I do to be made right with God? This is an important question for all of us. The average person believes it is accomplished by doing good or being the best we can. The Apostle Paul uses the example of Abraham to answer this question. In verse 3 he quotes Genesis 15:6. Abraham was concerned about not having any descendants and wondered if he should take matters into his own hands. God had him look at the night sky, and told him to count the stars if he could, then said that’s how many descendants he would have. God made a promise to Abraham, and how did Abraham respond, did he begin to work to attain the promise? No. He believed God. He took God at His Word and trusted Him. In verses 4-5, Paul says that’s the way it is with us. God doesn’t justify those who try to please Him with their own works; He justifies those who believe His promise.

Lord, it seems we are forever complicating what you have made so easy for us. We struggle with how to be right with you, often making great sacrifices to prove our worth, but all you ask is faith in your promise. Rather than personal performance help me walk by faith in your promise.

A question to ponder: Although a relationship with God is not based on works, how are works still an important part of the Christian life?
