Giving Willingly From the Heart

Read 1 Chronicles 28 – 29

Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy. 1 Chronicles 29:9 KJV

Although in the Old Testament, here is a wonderful example of what many normally think of as New Testament giving. When David concluded his preparations for the building of the Temple he first set the example of giving a generous gift and then asked the people for a love offering that would provide the needed funds for its construction during the reign of Solomon. The amount collected was overwhelmingly generous. This is thought of as an example of New Testament giving because each of its elements is emphasized in the New Testament. First, the need and opportunity were clearly explained so people would understand why they were being asked to give. Second, a good example was provided by David for them to follow.  Third, they were not coerced but asked to give willingly and generously. And fourth, they gave from their heart with joy in the Lord.

Lord, help me avoid giving because I feel like I have to, but instead help me to understand that everything I have comes from You and enable me to give willingly and generously with joy from my heart.
