God is Merciful

Read Genesis 17 – 20

And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand; and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth. And set him without the city. Genesis 19:16 KJV

This is an amazing glimpse of the mercy of God. Although a believer in God, Lot had long been fascinated with the sinful pleasures of the world. When given his choice of land by his uncle Abraham, Lot chose the best, the fertile grazing land, and eventually settled in Sodom. The ways of the world had such a grip on him that even in the face of impending judgment from God, he and his family lingered; they were not willing to let go. God had to forcibly remove them. The angels, sent by God, literally had to pull them out of the city. We are informed this was an act of mercy by God. He treated them better than they deserved. God could have left Lot and his family in the city to be judged with the rest, but He acted in mercy. Too many, even today, live similar to Lot, fascinated with the world and lingering with sin. How grateful I am God continues to be merciful unto us.

Lord, I know myself too well to stand in judgment of Lot and his family. I know I am far too at home in the world. I wish I could say such is not true of me, but I linger too long around sin; it seems to grip my life. And yet I am glad your grip is far stronger. Since taking hold of me, you have not let go. How grateful I have been for your mercy.

A question to ponder: God’s mercy was obvious in Lot’s life; it is for most of us, how has God shown His mercy in my life lately?
