God Keeps His Promises

Read Joshua 20 – 22

There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass. Joshua 21:45 KJV

Spoken at the conclusion of the dividing of the Promised Land to the tribes of Israel, this is a testimony to the faithfulness of God. He fulfilled every promise, not one word failed. Because this was true, after all their years of wandering in the wilderness and battles they had fought, the people of Israel were finally able to experience God’s Rest. This did not mean there were not still battles to fight, enemies to conquer, and land to take full possession of, but it did mean God had kept every promise He made. He always does. You and I can count on the same thing. The promises given to us by God in His Word are not empty. By His promises we have strength for today and hope for tomorrow. When we know this to be true and we experience it personally, then we too are able to enjoy rest in Him. This is a confidence that He will do all He has promised. We can depend on Him.

Lord, I am so glad you are the God who keeps promises. Living in a day when promises are broken on a regular basis how good it is to rest in your Word knowing that you will do everything you have promised.

A question to ponder through the day: What promises from God can a believer living today count on with the same assurance as those living in Joshua’s day?

Acting Prematurely

And the children of Israel heard say, behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh have built an altar over against the land of Canaan, in the borders of Jordan, at the passage of the children of Israel. Joshua 22:11 KJV

The battles were over, the land conquered and divided, and it was now time for Reuben, Gad, and the half tribe of Manasseh to go return home. That must have been a special moment. As they looked back they decided to build a memorial so the other tribes would not forget them, but their actions were misinterpreted and suddenly the other tribes were ready for war with them. Before acting on emotions, Joshua decided to send a group of representatives on a fact-finding mission. This decision showed tremendous wisdom: (1) it gave them an opportunity to simmer down and get their emotions under control rather than striking out prematurely, (2) to learn the facts first hand, (3) and to talk things out, rather than having their emotions rule the day. The decision to find out the facts first saved them from a tremendous error in judgment. What a lesson we need to learn today!

Lord, too many times I have been guilty of acting first and finding out the facts later. It always causes harm in some way and much more work than finding out the facts first. By continued growth in my walk with you help me follow the example set by Joshua.
