How Are the Mighty Fallen

Read 2 Samuel 1 – 3

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son: (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.) The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen! 2 Samuel 1:17-19 KJV

The first chapter of Second Samuel records the death of King Saul and his son Jonathan. David wrote a song to express his grief. It is interesting that after years of running from Saul, David expressed no animosity. He sung words of honor, bravery, and the great lost of the nation. The song title could be called: How Are the Mighty Fallen, because of its repeated use through the song. A great man had fallen to sin and death. Those words can also be used as a theme for the entire book and applied to David’s story. David was certainly a mighty man of God. No one else in Scripture is referred to as a man after God’s own heart, and yet in Second Samuel he falls into sin big time. The Fallen of the Mighty seems like an appropriate theme for our own time as well. The very best of God’s people are capable of the worst of sins, therefore all of us must take heed less we also fall.

Lord, I am well aware of my weaknesses. Protect me from ever thinking that I am beyond the ability to fall deeply into sin, and protect me from ever taking the plunge.
