Idolatry In The Heart

Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumbling-block of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them? Ezekiel 14:3 KJV

Some of the elders of Israel had come to Ezekiel to inquire of the Lord, but an outward look or act of religious sincerity is not enough to gain a response from Him. God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and demands a heart that is loyal toward Him. As God looked at the heart of these elders, He saw idolatry in their hearts. They had been removed from the land because of their idolatry, but even though they did not have their idols before them, they still held them in their hearts. Even though there had been an outward change due to their circumstances, the stumbling-block of idolatry was still before them. God will not respond to those who come to Him outwardly but do not regard Him in their hearts.

Lord, I know it is easy to go through the motions of loving and serving You but have a heart that is far removed from You due to idolatry and iniquity. Protect my heart from such hypocrisy. I desire to have a heart that is wholly devoted and loyal to You.
