Instructions for Living

By March 29, 2017No Comments

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Deuteronomy 6:5-7 KJV

These instructions were given to the people of Israel as they prepared to enter into the land of promise. If followed, they would help in establishing a strong nation. Although given to Israel so long ago we would do well to apply them to our lives today. First is our relationship with God. We are to love Him with all that we are: heart, soul and might. Can any of us claim to have reached this goal? We can always love the Lord more than we presently do. Second, we are to take His words and keep them in our heart. David said this helps us know how to live and keeps us from sinning against God (Psalm 119:11, 105). Third, we are to diligently teach the words of God to our children. Rather than a daily lecture we are to incorporate the teachings of Scripture into the various aspects of each day; by doing so our children personally learn to depend on God’s Word for life.

Lord, it is very easy for me to see how important these instructions are for my life but I also know how easy it is for me to fall short of keeping them. Help me to love you with all that I am. Help me to keep your words in my heart. Help me to teach my children and my children’s children your words in all the ways of life.
