Living with the Enemy

Read Joshua 15 – 17

As for the Jebusites the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the children of Judah could not drive them out: but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem unto this day. Joshua 15:63 KJV

It must be asked why the people of Judah could not drive the Jebusites out from the city of Jerusalem. Could it be the Jebusites were too strong and the people of Judah too weak? While it is possible the people of Judah were too weak, it is unlikely, for years they had been waging and winning battles. Actually it had nothing to do with lack of strength but a lack of faith. We learned in 13:6, God would drive out the remaining strongholds; all Judah needed to do was act on His promise. Apparently Judah was content to live with the Jebusites and could not drive them out because they were tired of fighting the enemy. Instead of claiming God’s promise and taking full possession of their inheritance, they found it much easier to live with the enemy, and did so for many years to come. Such disobedient compromise kept them around idolatry and from fully serving the Lord.

Lord, it is hard to criticize the people of Judah because I do the same thing; instead out completely driving out the enemy, I let up once I feel like I gain a certain level of peace. This makes me vulnerable in moments of weakness. Help me drive out the pockets of sin that remain in my life rather than being content to live with them.
