Loathing God’s Manna

Read Numbers 21 – 23

And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. Numbers 21:5 KJV

Reading through the book of Numbers have you ever thought it might be better called the book of Murmuring? The people of Israel complained a lot! It seems they were never satisfied with God’s providence, protection, or provisions. All of which were tremendous blessings from Him. Here they speak out against their daily portion of manna. For forty years, while they wandered in the wilderness, God had provided them with bread from heaven or the food of angels (Psalm 78:23-24). Imagine they didn’t plant it, tend it, or process it; all they had to do was to gather and enjoy God’s daily provision. Instead of gratitude, instead of savoring every bite, they loathed it. They rejected God’s provision of grace which had been their source of life, in the wilderness. God continues to shower us with gifts from heaven (James 1:17). Do we complain or are we grateful as we should be?

Lord, it is a wonder you continue to put up with our constant complaining and lack of appreciation for all you do for us. I am grateful you are not like us. Without your mercy and grace we would be without hope. Thank you especially for the true bread of heaven, Jesus Christ (John 6), by which we enjoy everlasting life.
