Long Prayers of Intensity

Read Deuteronomy 9: 7-29

Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the Lord thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the Lord. Deuteronomy 9:7 KJV

Have you ever been so moved by the sight of sin that you fell to the ground in prayer? Such prayers are needed: our families, our churches, and our country need them. But if it exists, it is not common. I fear most of us have become so accustomed to the presence of sin it fails to move us. In Deuteronomy 9:7-29 we learn how important it is to a nation. Moses, standing with the generation prepared to enter the Promised Land reminded them of the past in order to prepare them for the future. In verse 7 he says, “Remember and don’t forget.” He then reminds them of instances of national sin that brought them to the brink of destruction. Verse 7 summarizes what they were like from the time they left Egypt to the very moment he was speaking with them. They were God’s people, had God’s favor, but were also a rebellious people. Intense times of prayer preserved them.

Lord, some situations I have been concerned about have not changed. I suspect my fear of the consequences of sin have not been strong enough. While I have been moved to pray, it has not been with prolonged intensity. May my heart be so moved by sin I am driven to pray for your change as I should!
