Organized for Worship

Read Numbers 4 – 5

From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation. Numbers 4:3 KJV

Chapters 1-4 of Numbers are all about organization. It is interesting to note the pattern that is presented. Chapter 1 organizes the soldiers charged with protecting the camp in battle. Chapter 2 organizes the tribes around the Tabernacle for its protection and theirs. Chapter 3 organizes the Levites and the priesthood. Chapter 4 organizes the families that were to serve in the Tabernacle and their ministry regarding the holy things. The whole nation is organized with worship at the core of their organization. I often hear criticism against organization. People often want to discard with organized worship thinking the truest form of worship is experienced in the absence of organization. How wrong they are! God believes in organization, especially as it relates to worship. Worship that is not orderly loses its effectiveness and dies. Organized worship pleases God and His people.

Lord, I’ve noticed people tend to over organize or under organize. Both are expressions of man’s will and not Yours. Both also tend toward false expressions of worship. Help me be sensitive to the directions of Your Word that I might enjoy the freedom experienced in orderly worship that pleases You.
