Our Resources in God

Read Genesis 13 – 16

After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward. Genesis 15:1 KJV

Abraham had been through a series of challenging but successful decisions: he gave his nephew Lot the best choice of land, he rescued Lot from the enemies of Sodom and Gomorrah, and he refused to keep for himself any of the spoils of the battle that God alone would receive the glory in his life. These were all mature, godly decisions. But afterward Abraham became fearful. He had given up the best of the land, risked his life, jeopardizing his future, and refused financial blessing that was rightfully his. Sometimes even our best decisions cause us to worry just as they did Abraham. I am glad it was at this point God revealed Himself to Abraham as his comfort, protection, and blessing. Because of God’s involvement, Abraham had no real cause for concern. God was all the reward, protection, and comfort he would need. Nothing less is true for each of us today.

Lord, I tend to be like Abraham in that I become fearful even after making the right decisions. It is encouraging to know the same resources available to Abraham are also available to me. How good it is to know you as my Comfort, Protector, and Reward.

A question to ponder: How is the Lord our great reward when we are fearful of losing some of this world’s goods due to a right decision with God?
