Overtaken with God’s Blessing

Read Deuteronomy 27 – 29

And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 28:1-2 KJV

This was a promise from God made to the people of Israel before they entered into the Promise Land. It especially regarded their behavior. If they listened to the instructions of God and obeyed them, then God promised their life would be full of blessing. In fact, He promised to overtake them with blessing. The idea is to reach out and take hold of a person. Imagine being seized by the blessings of God! This was strictly a promise to Israel, but don’t miss the obvious application for us. When we listen to God’s Word and obey it we will be blessed. Not because God has obligated Himself to bless us or because we deserve it but because God’s direction for living is full of blessing. When we do what God says we will make better life choices, which will prosper us physically, materially, emotionally, and spiritually. In doing right we will be overtaken by God’s blessings.

Lord, how thankful I am for your Word. I have been overtaken with your blessing in every aspect of my life because your Word is true and those who obey it reap the benefits of doing so. Help me continue making the choices that allow me to enjoy your blessings.

A question to ponder through the day: If obedience to God’s Word brings blessings into our lives, what would disobedience bring?
