Prayer as a Complaint

Read Exodus 5:22 – 6:8

And Moses returned unto the Lord, and said Lord, wherefore hast thou so evil entreated this people? Why is it that thou hast sent me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in thy name, he hath done evil to this people; neither hast thou delivered thy people at all. Exodus 5:22-23 KJV

After reluctantly obeying the call of God to be used in Israel’s deliverance from Egypt, Moses returned to Him with a complaint. His complaint strikes us as being dangerously strong, but aren’t there times when we too cry emotionally out to God wondering why He has allowed or not allowed something to happen? Moses is seeing his fellow countrymen suffer and brings his anguish to God. That God does not rebuke his boldness in the verses to follow shows he had not gone too far, but also shows the patience and grace of God. Moses’ complaint is twofold: first, as he has felt all along, the results so far confirmed he was the wrong man for the job; he felt God made a mistake in sending him. Second the seeming inaction of God only made matters worst, so Moses was wondering what God was up to. In answer God reminded Moses who He was and that He was in control.

Lord, from our limited perspective we rarely understand why you work among us the way you do. In our ignorance we complain about and question your plan. Thank you for being patient with us. Help us to trust you even when it is hard for us to do.

A question to ponder: God reminded Moses of who He was, His promises, and His ability, in our times of confusion how would the same be helpful to us?
