Prayer for a Dead Man

Read Genesis 20:1-18

And Abraham said, because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife’s sake. Genesis 20:11 KJV

This is the second time Abraham was caught by an ungodly man in a lie about his wife. It indicates a shameful pattern that would later appear in his son as well. Parents, if we fail to deal with sinful habits in our lives they will likely become the habits of our children. Think of the testimony this also left with Abimelech, the host of Abraham. Though an ungodly man, he was put in the position of rebuking the ungodliness of God’s prophet in the land. It should have been the other way around! When we are in the world our faith needs to shine. It takes no faith to trust God in favorable circumstances; true faith shines best when we trust God in unfavorable times. Ultimately, Abraham prayed for a man God said was dead that he might live. Such prayer, coupled with honesty, should have marked Abraham from the start, had it done so his testimony in the land would have been better.

Lord, although a negative example, what happened with Abraham needs to be seen. Help me be a consistent example of faith to those around me. Honesty and prayer should mark my life as your representative, not dishonesty.

A question to ponder: What are some ways you should be praying for those around you without them ever needing to ask you to do so?
