Prepare to Meet God

Read Amos 1 – 4

Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God, O Israel. Amos 4:12 KJV

Reading through the book of Amos, my heart is often gripped by the presence of God. Again, again, and again, at least 55 times, we are confronted with, “Thus says the Lord!” or, “Hear the word of the Lord!” God was speaking to His people but they were not listening. Because of the hardness of their hearts and the dullness of their ears, God was sending judgment. How striking are the words of 4:12, “Prepare to meet thy God!” We sometimes use this statement in preparation for death, but because these were given to a people who had turned away from God, and would not hear His voice, these would not be the kind of words I would want to hear; these were words of terrifying judgment. The Bible says in Hebrews 10:31, “What a terrible thing it is to fall into the hands of the living God.” The best time for preparing to meet God is now, before judgment comes.

Lord, it says in Amos 4:13, You are the mighty Creator of all creation; You are my Creator. In many ways I too fail to listen and rebel against You. I humbly bow before You as my God and the ruler of my life and destiny.

A question to ponder: While there is still time, what does a person need to do in preparation to meet God?
