Rejoicing in the Lord

Read Habakkuk 1 – 3

Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. Habakkuk 3:18-19 KJV

The book of Habakkuk begins with complaining and ends with rejoicing. At first Habakkuk complained about the sin he saw around him. At every level of society he saw corruption and sin; he questioned why God was not doing anything about it. It seemed like God was not in control. Then when God told him He would use the Babylonians to punish Judah, Habakkuk complained about that because they were also a wicked people. God’s plan seemed in conflict with His character. But as God spoke and Habakkuk and listened, he began to see God as He is. Seeing God on His throne and in control changed his attitude: he was humbled before God and fully put his trust in Him. His circumstances were not going to get any better, in fact they were about to get much worst, but Habakkuk was able to live above the difficulties, rejoicing in the Lord as his strength and salvation.

Lord, Habakkuk, like Peter, had his eyes on the storm and was sinking, but once he focused on You he was lifted above the waves and able to rejoice in You as his strength and salvation. I too have the same tendency at times. I get overwhelmed by life. As You helped both Peter and Habakkuk to get refocused, help me to stay focused on You.

A question to ponder: Has there been a time I have questioned what God was doing in my life but later, in hindsight, I could see the wisdom of it?
