Seven Deadly Sins

Read Proverbs 4 – 6

These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV

One of the most difficult truths for people to accept is that God not only loves but also hates. He hates sin. Here, sins are listed which are an abomination to Him. It is a list of seven deadly sins. These are not the only sins which God hates, He hates all sins many of which are mentioned throughout the Bible, these serve only as a summary. Rather than re-list them notice three things about sin. (1) Sin involves every part of a person: our eyes, tongue, hands, heart, feet, and mouth. Sin is never isolated in our life instead it affects all of who we are. (2) God looks at every kind of sin as abomination: sins of thought, word, and deed. Most often what we think affects what we say, and eventually shows up in what we do. (3) Perhaps the most striking thing is, we find ourselves in this list. When we condemn others it is helpful to remember there are abominations in our own lives as well.

Lord, while it is comforting to know You hate sin, it is discomforting to know such sin is present in me. Protect me from the sins that I seem to be more susceptible to, especially sins of thought, word, and deed. Help me to hate sin as You do.

A question to ponder: What is my first response to sin’s temptation, am I drawn to it as Eve was, or do I run from it as Joseph did? What changes do I need to make so that it is the latter?
