The Anointing of Aaron

By February 7, 2017No Comments

Read Leviticus 8 – 9

And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron’s head, and anointed him to sanctify him. Leviticus 8:12 KJV

Here, Aaron was anointed as the first high priest of Israel. As such he represented the people in the bringing of their sacrifices before God as a covering for their sins. His office foreshadowed the office of Jesus Christ, the Anointed One, who, unlike Aaron, serves as our perfect High Priest (Hebrews 5), without defeat, forever, presenting us before the Father even now. Aaron was anointed by the pouring of special oil, reserved only for the high priest and articles of the Tabernacle (Exodus 30:22-33), over his head. In Psalm 133:2, David says it ran down his beard and even the skirts of his garments. This indicated his anointing was without measure as he served in this most holy office. The anointing set him apart from the rest of Israel for God’s special use. His anointing took place before the whole congregation, and filled the air with its pleasant fragrance.

Lord, what a special moment the anointing of Aaron was for the people of Israel, but I am grateful Jesus Christ serves as a greater High Priest than Aaron, perfectly interceding in my behalf that my needs might be met with your mercy and grace.
