The Branch to Come

Read Zechariah 5 – 9

And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. Zechariah 6:12-13 KJV

This is one of the great Old Testament passages on the Second Coming of Christ. Using Joshua, the high priest, symbolically (3:8), the Messiah is referred to as the Branch yet to come. Joshua would be used in rebuilding the Temple of the restoration, but pictured one far greater. Information is given about the person of the Messiah. He will grow out of His place; He will have a lowly origin, a reference to His birth (Micah 5:2). Information is also given about His position. He will sit and rule upon His throne as both King and Priest. Right now He sits at the right hand of the Father, but in His second coming He will sit on His rightful throne, the throne of David (2 Samuel 7:13; Luke 1:32; Acts 2:30). And information is provided about His mission. He will build the millennial Temple, and bear the glory of it. He will also establish peace as King and Priest united on the throne.

Lord, prophecies, as this one, excite me as I am reminded of Your control over time and circumstances of life. The people of the restoration were going through difficult times and You encouraged them with the future. Since this prophecy still concerns the future, it remains an encouragement for us today. Your Word keeps us looking forward.

A question to ponder: Why do prophecies about the future encourage us while facing difficulties in the present?
