The Burnt Sacrifice

Read Leviticus 1 – 4

If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. Leviticus 1:3-4 KJV

The book of Leviticus begins by describing the various sacrifices that were required for the atonement of sin. The burnt sacrifice was the only sacrifice entirely consumed on the altar. It foreshadowed the total sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. The repetition of this and the other sacrifices emphasized the high cost of sin. Think of it: it cost you the animal being sacrificed, you had to be the one that killed the animal, this was done before others that were doing the same thing thus emphasizing the prevalence of sin, and every time you did so you were reminded that sin separated you from God and that the penalty for sin was death. The sacrifices made it difficult to take sin lightly. Jesus abolished the need for repeated sacrifices by His once for all sacrifice on the Cross. It was costly, complete, a sacrifice sufficient for the world, and therefore should never be treated lightly by us.

Lord, I am so glad your one sacrifice on the cross paid for all my sin once and for all. However, since I am not daily faced with the cost of my sin, as the Israelites were through daily sacrifices, help me not take either sin or your sacrifice for sin lightly.
