The Confusing of the Languages

By January 7, 2016No Comments

Read Genesis 10 – 12

Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. Genesis 11:9 KJV

A significant event in the early development of man, which continues to affect us today, was the confusing of the languages at the Tower of Babel. Man decided to work together, make for them a name, and take control of their lives in opposition to God. With little effort, by confusing the language, God demonstrated His control and their accountability to Him. Rather than harsh judgment, I think of this as an act of God’s mercy. Quite often, when men work together, we work against God, and our own harm. But after all these years we are still apart, confused, and unable to work in unity to our own destruction. That’s got to be God’s mercy! Our world is more connected than it has been since Babel, but with our advances we are still divided and closer to destroying ourselves than ever. I am glad God is still in control. Man’s future is brighter because God controls our destiny.

Lord, what a world it would be if we were really left to ourselves. I am grateful for your interventions in the course of mankind. It is because you continue to be involved with us that we have not already destroyed ourselves. I thank you for such mercy!

A question to ponder: When mankind works together, who do they work against and why?
