The Davidic Covenant

Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. 2 Samuel 7:11-13 KJV

David had expressed a desire to build a house or temple for God where the Ark of the Covenant could be placed. God denied David his request. However, in response, God made a wonderful promise, which has come to be known as the Davidic Covenant. This was an unconditional covenant made with David by God. It depended only on God’s promise to David. According to the angel Gabriel, in his announcement to Mary, in Luke 1:32, Jesus Christ is the seed that shall establish the throne of David forever. Because this is true, although Jesus has come and paid the price for our sins, we expect Him to come again, according to promise, to sit upon the throne of David in His Kingdom to come.

Lord, how grateful I am for the unconditional promises of Your Word, including this one made to David. As You keep all the promises You make, You have been keeping this one as well. By faith I look forward to its completion when Jesus, the Son of David, sits upon the throne of David in Your promised Kingdom to come.
