The Deceitfulness of Pride

The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD. Obadiah 1:3-4 KJV

The book of Obadiah is a small book but contains a big message about the danger of pride. It was directed against the people of Edom, who lived south of Judah; however its message still speaks true for us today. Pride starts in the heart, deceives, causes people to exalt themselves over others, and pits them against God. Edom’s pride was based on location. A rugged and difficult territory gave them a false sense of security. As a result, they boasted against their neighbors and against God. But eventually, the deception of pride always brings the same results into the lives of those deceived and lifted up by it: shame and destruction. For a time they stood against their neighbors, but not against God.

Lord, pride seems to be a problem in every age and among all people. Although I have no reason to struggle with pride, I often do. The slightest success makes me feel better than I am and steals glory away from You. Help me acknowledge from my heart that I am nothing apart from You and therefore, if I am to boast, it is to be in You.
