The Deceitfulness of Sin

Read Numbers 24 – 26

And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. Numbers 25:2 KJV

This really starts in chapter twenty-two with Balaam. Balak, the Amorite, had summoned Balaam to curse God’s people, promising him great riches. From the start, God made it clear this was not His will, but Balaam kept looking for a loophole because he desired the riches. Balaam desired wealth over God’s will. Some would say they desire both, and that’s what Balaam would have said, but it was obvious that wealth was his priority. In the end God never allowed Balaam to curse His people. But what Balaam could not accomplish openly, he did accomplish privately; he advised Balak to put a stumbling block before the children of Israel: immorality and idolatry. They could not openly curse the people of Israel, but were able to entice Israel to curse themselves through sin. Sin is rarely obvious; it entices the desires already within us and deceitfully leads us astray.

Lord, little changes. Sin promises a good time and we still fall for its enticement, but in the end it always brings death. Twenty-four thousand Israelites died in Peor, and just think of all the wasted lives even today due to the deceitfulness of sin! Help me be on guard against the deceitfulness of sin.

A question to ponder: What are some of the lies of sin that God’s people still fall for today?
