The Fallacy of Righteousness by Association

By September 2, 2015No Comments

Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD. Ezekiel 14:14 KJV

Like today, the people of Israel in Ezekiel’s day assumed righteousness by association. They assumed because of their history, the marvelous ways God had worked with them, and some of the great men who stood out for their godliness that ultimately they would be spared and not completely removed from the land. We do the same thing, we assume because of our history as a Christian nation that God is bound to protect us, or because we had godly grandparents that ultimately we will be okay. God’s response demonstrated the error of such thinking and the condition of Israel, if Noah, Daniel, and Job were still among them (Daniel was) they could deliver themselves but not the nation from judgment.

Lord, help us never assume that we are okay with You because of our national identification or even our personal heritage. Help us to understand that godliness is a personal responsibility and that ultimately we stand alone before You.
