Read Zechariah 1 -4

And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Zechariah 3:1-2 KJV

Zechariah was given a vision of Joshua the high priest. As high priest he represented the remnant that had returned from captivity. He was clothed in filthy garments, which represented their sinfulness. At his right hand stood Satan accusing him before the Lord, pointing out his sin and unworthiness of God’s blessing. Satan is the accuser of the brethren (Revelation 12:10); he acts like a prosecuting attorney, arguing before God that we are useless as His servants. Satan did the same with Job (Job 1:6-12). But the Lord (our advocate, 1 John 2:1) rebuked Satan on three counts: this was a brand plucked out of the fire (an act of God’s grace), He would cause his iniquity to pass from him (God was forgiving him of his sins), and He would give him a change of raiment (new clothes indicated a new standing with God). The Lord pleads the same in behalf of every believer.

Lord, although this is a scene from long ago, I understand that it continues to be repeated because Your people continue to sin and Satan continues to accuse. I am grateful for the grace, forgiveness, and standing You have given us. Although we are unworthy, by Your choice You have plucked us from the fire we deserve and enabled us to walk before You.

A question to ponder: In light of God’s grace, forgiveness, and standing, how should I live my life today?
