For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. Luke 7:28 KJV
The proclamation of Christ concerning John the Baptist is amazing. In the estimation of Christ, what possibly could have made John so great? His greatness was in the uniqueness of his calling. He was the messenger of God to announce the coming of Christ. It set him apart from everyone else. The prophets spoke of the Messiah, but John got to point Him out! As part of this statement though, Jesus said something challenging. He said, notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater. How is that possible? John was the friend of the bridegroom (John 3:29) who had the great privilege of announcing His coming but our opportunity is as the bride of Christ, which is far better!
Lord, we are greater than John the Baptist only by virtue of our relationship with You. You and only You make us great! Knowing that is humbling but also encouraging. Since John the Baptist counted his position such a privilege and sought to live it out faithfully, how much more should we also live ours out faithfully!
