The Heart of a Parent

And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. 1 Kings 3:24-27 KJV

This is provided as an example of Solomon’s wisdom. Two women were arguing over which one was the true mother of a child. When Solomon threatened to divide the child into two equal parts the true mother was revealed by her desire to spare the child. Solomon’s wisdom was based upon this idea: it is unthinkable that a mother would harm, much less allow the death of her own child. But it happens too often in our society. Parents do harm and kill their own children. This reflects how our value of human life has changed, I believe, starting with our acceptance of abortion. The true heart of a parent will love their children, sacrifice themselves for them, and give them what they need to live.

Lord, further develop in me the heart of a true parent that I might give my children and their children what they need to live. Help me to also promote the value and dignity of human life in our time.
