The Mercy of God

Read Lamentations 1 – 3

It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23 KJV

Looking over the ruins of Jerusalem, following its destruction by Babylon, you would think Jeremiah would have been overcome with despair, but he reached a much different conclusion: God is merciful, He treats us better than we deserve. Because of their sins, the people of Israel deserved to be utterly consumed, but even in punishment God had shown mercy, they were not consumed, they still had a future. The mercy and compassion of God never fails, His faithfulness is great. Even in the worst of circumstances that is something you and I can count on as well. We may fail God, but He will not fail us. Since this is true, no matter how we may have failed yesterday, and that is often the case, we can still start fresh today in God’s mercy, compassion, and faithfulness. Through His compassion, God sees our condition, and is faithfully moved to help us in His mercy.

Lord, I know from personal experience the truth and encouragement of this Scripture. You have always treated me better than I deserve. You have shown Yourself faithful even when I have not. As I live this day, it is only by Your mercy and compassion. Thank You.

A question to ponder: In what ways this week have I been dependent on God’s faithful compassion and mercy?
