The Quality of Our Gifts

Read Leviticus 22:17-25

Ye shall not offer unto the LORD that which is bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut; neither shall ye make any offering thereof in your land. Neither from a stranger’s hand shall ye offer the bread of your God of any of these; because their corruption is in them, and blemishes be in them: they shall not be accepted for you. Leviticus 22:24-25 KJV

Sacrifices that were made to the LORD by the people of Israel were to be without any defect. They were expected to give their best, not their worst. This was true, not only of required sacrifices, but also of all free will sacrifices. They simply were not acceptable to the Lord. I am quite often surprised at what people want to give the LORD even today, whether it is through worship, service, or gifts, too often it is far less than best. We give what costs us little and think God should be pleased. They are not any more acceptable to the Lord today than they were in the days of Moses. The sacrifices in the wilderness looked forward to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who was a lamb without spot or blemish (1 Peter 1:19). Our gifts look back in appreciation of His sacrifice. He gave His best for us. Out of appreciation, what we give in return should be our best, not our leftovers.

Lord, I know without any doubt you deserve my very best; I also know that too often you do not receive it from me. Forgive me. When I give, help me to give what you deserve.
