Read Genesis 1 – 3

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Genesis 1:1 KJV

Whenever I read this first verse of the Bible, I am reminded of two basic truths about God. Before there was a heaven and earth, you and me, or anything else, there was God. How He existed before anything else I have no idea. However, I believe it to be true. That bothers some, but the materialist, who does not believe in God, faces a similar dilemma: how is it possible for life, or anything, to come into existence out of nothing? The Bible does not explain how God always existed, that is left for us to accept by faith. But it does tell us what the materialist cannot; it tells us how everything else came into existence. The Bible presents God as the Creator; He made out of nothing, heaven and earth. Before we can believe anything else the Bible teaches, we must come to terms with these first two basic truths about God taught in the first verse. If they are not true, neither is the rest.

Lord, I do believe you are the Creator, who always was and always shall be. As the Creator, I owe my existence to you. Because I accept the first verse of the Bible, I also accept the rest of the Bible as your revealed will for my life and all of creation. As I study its pages help me to live in light of them.

A question to ponder: If the first verse of the Bible is true, then what does that mean for me regarding the rest of Scripture?
