The Three-fold Provision of God’s Law

By April 22, 2013No Comments

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. Romans 7:7-9 KJV

According to these verses, the Law of God provides us with a three-fold knowledge of sin. First, it establishes the standard by which all mankind are equally accountable. Without a set standard, then all behavior is relative. What’s right and wrong in my eyes may not be in your eyes. Not only does God’s Law set the standard, it shows each of us what sin is. Sin takes place whenever you and I transgress or violate God’s law. The Law of God also stirs up sin in each of our lives. Have you ever noticed that whenever you are told not to do something there is suddenly this strong desire to do it? This provision of the Law helps us to know we are sinners incapable of saving ourselves, in need of a Savior.

Lord, I am grateful for Your Law, for it is only by it that I know I am a sinner. Feeling the consequences of sin made me feel hopeless until I realized that Your Law actually pointed to Your greater provision, a Savior.
