The Year of Jubilee

Read Leviticus 25 – 27

And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. Leviticus 25:10 KJV

Chapter 25 especially turns our attention to the year of jubilee, with it being referred to by name twelve times in the chapter. Jubilee speaks of blowing the ram’s horn. Every fiftieth year, following the Day of Atonement, the ram’s horn was blown announcing the year of jubilee. Verse 10 explains the primary purpose of the jubilee year was to proclaim liberty throughout the land; people were to be set free from bondage and property was to be returned to original owners. Because of its unique proclamation of liberty this verse is inscribed on America’s Liberty Bell. Jesus used this same idea at the public proclamation of His ministry in the synagogue of Nazareth. He said He was anointed to preach the acceptable year of the Lord, to preach the gospel to the poor, and to set at liberty them that are bruised. The ultimate fulfillment of the year of jubilee is experienced in Christ.

Lord, I am excited and grateful for the liberty I have experienced by faith in you. Thank you for coming as the Anointed One to set the captive free.

A question to ponder: In the year of jubilee, not only were captives set free but their possessions were returned to them as well, when we were set free by faith in Christ what was returned to us which was lost in our captivity?
