To God Be the Glory

Read Judges 8 – 9

Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian. And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the LORD shall rule over you. Judges 8:22-23 KJV

At God’s choosing, Gideon had served as a judge and a deliverer, but He had not appointed Gideon to be a king over the people. We should always be eager to do what God calls us to, but we should never take on ourselves what God has not given us, especially when it means taking credit for what He has done. The people wanted to make Gideon their king because they were giving him the credit, not God, for the victory they had just won. Gideon was wise to respond as he did, he understood the implication of their offer. He would not be their king because God already was and He alone deserved their glory. Like Gideon let us always be quick not to take the glory that belongs to God alone. Let us also be careful not to give glory to those who do not deserve it. Sometimes as Christians, we are quick to give our own leaders a status that is not theirs to hold. Let us always remember the Lord is the Head, Builder, and Chief-Shepherd of the Church.

Lord, too often I gladly receive pats on the back and words of commendation that I really do not deserve because the credit for such things actually belongs to you. Forgive me for my foolishness. Help me give credit where credit is due. Help me give you the glory.
