Treatment of Strangers

Read Leviticus 19:33-34

And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. Leviticus 19:33-34 KJV

The Israelites were commanded to reach out to strangers among them with love. This good treatment of strangers was based on their mistreatment while strangers in the land of Egypt and God’s loving treatment they received. What God had done for them they were to show the same to others. In fact, they were to love the stranger as one of them. That continues to be a good principle for us to follow today. Sometimes we respond to our own mistreatment by mistreating people ourselves, instead it should cause us to be more sensitive to their circumstances. An even greater incentive is our experience of God’s love. As God has loved us, though strangers to His promises, we are to love the stranger among us. The combination of knowing what being mistreated is like, and knowing what real love is like prepares us to treat aliens in modern situations as they should be treated.

Lord, I know what it is like to be mistreated by others and loved by you. Help me to never forget either one that I might comfort others with the comfort I have received.
