Two Ways of Living

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalm 1:3 KJV

Psalm 1 teaches there are two ways to live: the ungodly way and the godly way. With these two ways of living there are both present and future consequences: the ungodly are scornful and lack stability in the present, and will not stand in God’s future judgment; the godly receives their counsel from the Word of God, this enables them to be fruitful in the present and enjoy God’s security in the future. The distinction between these two is in the way they walk, where they stand, and who they sit with. The ungodly walk in the counsel of the ungodly, make their stand in the lifestyle of sinners, and sit with those who scorn the Word of God. The godly walks in the counsel of God’s Word, make their stand with God’s people, and sit with those who respect God’s way. The Psalmist teaches the godly way is refreshing, fruitful, and prosperous. Why would we choose to live any other way?

Lord, I am amazed by the choices we often make. The benefits of living our lives Your way seem so obvious and yet, quite often, we try to live both ways. The result is always unsatisfying. Help me to walk, stand, and sit in the way of the godly.
