Upon Our Heart Before God

Read Exodus 28 – 29

And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the holy place, for a memorial before the LORD continually. Exodus 28:29 KJV

Chapter 28 describes in detail the holy garments of the high priest. Every part of their apparel represented their function as mediators between God and the people. What an awesome responsibility the high priest had. An important part of his garment was the breastplate containing twelve stones which bore the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. The breastplate hung over his heart. It did so for a reason. It was full of symbolism, both for himself and for the people. It reminded them that he represented them, and it reminded him when he stood before God it was never for himself. It hung over his heart for a reason; God wanted to impress upon him that his ministry was one of love. He was not simply a hireling doing a job; he bore the people upon his heart every time he went before God. What a challenging reminder to any minister serving people and God today!

Lord, protect me from the feelings of isolation sometimes associated with ministry. At times it is too easy to feel we stand alone when it is never true. We always represent the people You have called us to serve Help me serve, not by constraint, but willing, bearing Your people upon my heart.
