When Our Part Seems Too Small

Read Numbers 16 – 17

Seemeth it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them? Numbers 16:9 KJV

Korah led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron which ultimately resulted in the dramatic death of 14,700 who followed him. Korah and many of them who followed him were important men among the people of Israel. They served in the Tabernacle and handled the holy things of God. But their place of service and the honor it enjoyed was not enough; they wanted a share of the spotlight Moses and Aaron enjoyed. Jealousy, envy, and pride, along with a huge dose of ingratitude for the positions they held are all mingled together in their complaint against Moses and Aaron. Since God designated the positions for each of them, their complaint was actually against Him. They should have been grateful for the positions God had given them, but pride demanded more. The most important position for any of us to fill is the one God gives us. There are no small positions in service for God.

Lord, this passage shakes me. Too many times rather than being satisfied with the roles You have given me to fill, roles which have been more than I should have expected, I have wanted more; more influence and spotlight. Looking in the mirror I don’t seem much better than Korah. Thank You for being patient with me, and thank You for the opportunities of service and honor You have provided. I really am grateful.
